If, at first...

January 30, 2019

BIC 2019 - Completing the brief for this competition gave me a thrill - the set book, 'Howl's Moving Castle', is an enjoyable read, a quirky, witty, human story about magic, one of my favourite subjects! This is the first time I have entered a competition of this standard and the time spent I consider worth while, though I have not been selected - the purpose is good practice, good discipline and a high goal - plus simply enjoying what I do.

I will be happy to have another go next time!!!

In the meantime, I've added the illustrations completed for the competition to my gallery - please have a look and let me know what you think.

Peace,

Graeme

Ongoing Elephantine Projects - Another Tusk Completed!!!

December 18, 2018

With 'The Elephantini Marriage' completed other projects begin to swim back into view. My parody/homage to Jan van Eyck sits on easel, a tribute to my love of the elephant and all the amazing creatures who inhabit our world. Paint brushes beckon, pencils are poised. Illustrations stream into sketches, dragons doze in the dream borders, little elephantoons frolick freely in the fields of the mind's eye. Onward, onward all...

April Showers in a New Studio

April 18, 2018

We have been dwelling in our new residence now for three weeks - and what bliss to hear rain on the roof whilst painting in my new (SPACIOUS) studio!

News to date:

'Elvira and the Triplets' by Pat Clarke and myself is OUT! If you are a fan of Pat's brilliant Aussie bush stories, look this book up and purchase a copy for your reading pleasure - the reviews so far have been outstanding.

'Flatulent Flavio', a new collaborative effort between the amazing Cassidy Jackson-Carroll and myself, is at the printers and due to hit the bookshops soon!!! Flavio is feeling a bit off-colour again - and with good reason! Watch out for this one - and have a large peg handy, you may need it...

2018.

Facing the blank canvas the artist ponders the idea, that figment which will be molded in paint on this empty stretch of fabric. Its conception, its design, the final sketches, have all been an amusing and enlightening journey. Here the artist stands upon the brink, with brush in hand, palette poised at the penultimate moment, prepared to commit.

NEXT: The Arnolfini parody, an elephantine nudge and nod to the genius of Jan van Eyck.

Graeme

2017 Elephants and Beyond...

November 08, 2017

2017 has been another busy year. Illustrating four more children's books for authors Cassidy Jackson-Carroll, Pat Clarke and poet Jacqui Warnock, plus painting a portrait of three beautiful children and other commissions has taken a large chunk of time - an immensely enjoyable chunk of time!

In the background, in my spare-spare time, fantasy pictures continued to be sketched and my Elephantasia project continued to progress.

An example is included here.

You have my solemn word that I will now try to keep this site up to date...

Peace

November 11, 2016

November 2016. I am painting two new series: 'Elephant or Irrelephant' and 'Dragon Species'. Both of these series will be progressive and will continue through 2017 and 2018. The sample sketch is called 'Vitruvian Elephant' (after Leonardo, after Vitruvio), copyright Graeme Compton 2016.

Thoroughly enjoying myself!!!

Time to Begin 2016

January 04, 2016

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!

It's time to begin! Fantasy and Magic Realism will be on the easel this year. 2015 yielded a plethora of ideas and sketches. Time to indulge the paint brushes and pens!

Phoenixes, Dragons, Fairytales! and of course Anthropomorphised Elephants! And another book with Pat Clarke!

I hope you enjoy the results!

Peace and good health,

Graeme

The Foxy Chook Book is Almost Here!

November 07, 2015

'The Further Adventures of a One-Eyed Chook - Return of the Fox' by author Pat Clarke, with illustrations by Graeme Compton, is about to strut into the great big chicken coop of the world! And it is certainly something to crow about! We've been warming up for this one over the past three years, not just preening our feathers, or adoring the feathers in our caps, but going through our work with a fine-tooth comb, hen-pecking the editors, scratching about for something to chew on and finely laying a golden egg! And it will be launched in December, on Friday the 11th at 6.30pm, 35 Dangar Street, Narrabri! Come on, pluck up the spirit, pay us a flying visit!

The Bravest Dugong Surfs It In!

September 10, 2015

Alec Trost's children's book 'The Bravest Dugong' is a colourful, exciting story in verse about Charlie D, a dugong with an interest in all things human. Charlie sets off on an adventure into human society one day and ends up surfing, painting, cooking, paragliding and all sorts of things! When I met Alec and agreed to do the illustrations for his book, I was particularly struck by his desire to help the dugongs and his deep concerns for the marine environment and animal life. $1 from the sale of each copy of 'The Bravest Dugong' will go to SEA LIFE TRUST for dugong conservation efforts - not just a fun book for kids, but one which will do some good!

Edible Activity!

September 09, 2015

Last year I had the pleasure of illustrating a children's book for Emma Martin about nutrition called 'The Healthy Harvest'. Emma's business is Edible Education and she came up with another neat little book this year called 'The Healthy Harvest Activity Book', for which I also drew the illustrations. Emma's Activity Book and the original Healthy Harvest are now available online and are definitely worth the purchase. Help your kids learn about what to eat and where it comes from today!
